These tests are all defined in the IEC61000-4-x series of standards.

Tests are applied as appropriate.
For example:
- If products are battery powered and have no connection to the public mains supply. -4-4, -4-5 and -4-11 are not required.
- If products are not intended for use in areas that are subject to high magnetic field, -4-8 and -4-9 are not required. Such areas would be power stations, hospitals, electric railways.
The level of stress applied also depends on the function of the product and the environment in which it will be used. These levels are specified in the relevant product specific standards.
