Non-RF Immunity

These tests are all defined in the IEC61000-4-x series of standards.

IEC61000-4-2 ESD (Electrostatic Discharge)
IEC61000-4-4 EFT (Electrical Fast Transient) and Burst.  Simulates transients that
occur on the mains distribution wiring when loads are switched on/off.
IEC61000-4-5 Surge Simulates effect of lightning strikes on power lines.
IEC61000-4-8 Magnetic field (mains power frequency)
IEC61000-4-9 Magnetic field (Pulsed)
IEC61000-4-11 Dips and Interrupts. Common occurrences on the mains supply.

Tests are applied as appropriate.
For example:

  • If products are battery powered and have no connection to the public mains supply. -4-4, -4-5 and -4-11 are not required.
  • If products are not intended for use in areas that are subject to high magnetic field, -4-8 and -4-9 are not required. Such areas would be power stations, hospitals, electric railways.

The level of stress applied also depends on the function of the product and the environment in which it will be used. These levels are specified in the relevant product specific standards.
